The World Bank and Redevelopment

A joint meeting of The Empire Club of Canada and The Canadian Club of Toronto. A description of the World Bank as a specialized agency of the United Nations. Canada's contributions to the achievements of the Bank. The Pearson Commission Report. Three principal points: the World Bank has been moving in new directions over the past five years; the shift is due to problems which confront the developing world; the developed nations must realize that it is in their own interest to make a greater effort to assist the developing nations. A detailed review of the changes and the reasons for them. Problems in specific countries. The main issues: food, infant mortality, life expectancy, illiteracy, and unemployment. Statistics and examples to support claims and the reasons for change in direction of the World Bank. Opportunities for Canada to contribute.
