In the lead up to International Women’s Day, the Empire Club of Canada is pleased to present our Women Who Lead panel discussion featuring Teresa Resch – VP of Operations and Player Development, Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE); Caroline Riseboro – Chief Executive Officer, Plan International; Phillip Grosch – Partner and National Leader Digital Services Consulting, PWC in conversation with Nicole Foster – National Chair, Equal Voice.

Nicole Foster: Equal Voice National Chair Nicole Foster has served on the Board of Directors since 2015 and has been an active volunteer during that time, including chairing the Communications committee as well as the historic Daughters of the Vote program.
Nicole has been a long-time and passionate advocate for women in politics, having first become involved with Equal Voice over 12 years ago when she served on the Ottawa chapter steering committee. She has been active in numerous political campaigns and events. She served two terms as President of the National Women’s Liberal Commission (NWLC) on the Liberal Party of Canada’s national board of directors. The NWLC’s mandate is to ensure equal participation of women and men at all levels of the Party, to represent and promote the interests of women within the Party and to encourage the active participation of women at all levels of Party activities.
Nicole is also Head of AWS Public Policy (Canada) at Amazon, where she leads the company’s public policy efforts in support of the Amazon Web Services (AWS) business in Canada, including the federal and provincial levels of government. In this role, she focuses on issues such as cloud computing, cyber security, data protection, government procurement and acquisition issues, and renewable energy policy.
Prior to joining Amazon in 2018, Nicole led the Toronto office for Global Public Affairs, providing senior public affairs counsel to a diverse range of clients, including both the private and not-for-profit organizations. Nicole worked with clients in a variety of sectors including natural resources, health, infrastructure, retail, consumer and gaming.
Before joining Global in 2004, Nicole worked for a number of years in political roles in Ottawa, including as the Legislative Assistant to the Minister of the Environment. She also worked in the rural affairs portfolio as well as Status of Women and Multiculturalism.
Nicole currently serves on the steering committee for the GTA Chapter of the American Chamber of Commerce. She is a former Director on the Board of the Government Relations Institute of Canada, a member of the Women’s Executive Network, and the Canadian Study of Parliament Group. Nicole has a Bachelor of Arts in Art and Culture Studies with an extended minor in Political Science from Simon Fraser University.
Teresa Resch: Now in her fifth season with the Raptors. Teresa was promoted to Vice President, Basketball Operations & Player Development in August of 2015. She will be responsible for off-court player development programs and be a liaison between the basketball and team business operations.
Resch played an instrumental role in overseeing plans for the team’s new practice facility, BioSteel Centre, which opened in February 2016. She was also a key member of the team that launched Raptors 905 – Toronto’s NBA Development League affiliate.
Prior to joining the Raptors in 2013, Resch served as Ultimate Hoops National Basketball Operations Manager for Life Time Fitness where she was responsible for basketball programming at 104 Club locations in the US and Canada.
Resch returns to the NBA, having spent four years at the NBA League Office from 2006 through 2011. While at the NBA, Resch assisted the International Basketball Operations department in operating Basketball Without Borders Camps in four different continents and was instrumental in the establishment of the first camp to feature women campers. Additionally, she assisted in maintaining and expanding the NBA’s relationship with the US Department of State’s SportsUnited program. In her initial role in the NBA domestic basketball operations department, Resch oversaw league roster management and operations of league sponsored events NBA All-Star Weekend, NBA Draft and NBA Draft Combine.
Resch began her career in the sports industry as an event intern at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex. Resch earned her MBA in Sports Administration from St. Thomas University (FL) and a BA in Business Communications from Augustana College (SD) where she was an all-conference player for the Vikings Volleyball team.
Caroline Riseboro: is the President & CEO of Plan International Canada – the leading NGO in Canada advancing the rights of children and equality for girls. As the youngest person to ever lead a major Canadian charity, Caroline is a passionate advocate for gender equality and is well-respected for her commitment to tackling some of the world’s most pressing issues. She has a proven track record of leading organizations to new heights by challenging the status quo. In 2017, she was recognized as a Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100 Award Winner and was awarded the Bronze medal in the Woman of the Year – Government or Non-Profit category at the Stevie Awards for Women in Business. Caroline regularly writes and speaks on the topic of gender equality and under her leadership, Plan International Canada has delivered record-breaking results.
Prior to joining Plan International Canada, Caroline was Senior Vice-President, Marketing & Development at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) Foundation, and held many senior roles at World Vision Canada, more recently as Senior Vice-President of Marketing and Engagement at World Vision Canada. She was the first and youngest woman in the agency’s history to serve in this senior role. Before joining the non-profit sector, Caroline began her career in advertising and communications.
Caroline’s influence in the sector extends through her voluntary leadership roles. She sits on the Board of the Humanitarian Coalition and CAN-WaCH, is the President-elect for the Association of Fundraising Professionals GTA chapter, and has sat on numerous task forces including with Imagine Canada and the Canadian Marketing Association’s Not-For-Profit Council. She holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree from McGill University and is pursuing a Master of Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership from Carleton University.
Phillip Grosch: is a Partner and National Leader of the Digital Services Consulting practice at PwC Canada, with more than 20 years of experience spanning many industries, including financial services, the public sector and communications in Canada and the U.S. Working out of PwC’s Toronto office, he and his team help clients harness the power of the new digital reality and disruption to drive innovation.
Philip strongly believes in the importance of identifying, inspiring and supporting top talent as a critical driver of business success.
Philip is the founding sponsor and joint architect of PwC’s innovative leadership program targeted at top talent and women, called Women in Leadership. He is a member of the advisory board for WXN’s ‘Canada’s 100 Most Powerful Women’, as well as a board member for WNORTH, a boutique conference for top and aspiring women business leaders.
Philip is a strong supporter of veterans with a focus on their successful transition to civilian life. He is on the board of Treble Victor Group (3V) and a member of Canada Company. He has been awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal as well as a Commendation from the Minister of Veteran Affairs for his support of the veteran community.
Celina Caesar-Chavannes: is Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Development. Ms. Caesar-Chavannes is a successful entrepreneur and the recipient of both the Toronto Board of Trade’s Business Entrepreneur of the Year for 2012 and the 2007 Black Business and Professional Association’s Harry Jerome Young Entrepreneur Award.
Ms. Caesar-Chavannes was a well-known research consultant and worked with a variety of private, government and non-government organizations.
An international lecturer on the inclusion of marginalized populations in clinical research, Ms. Caesar-Chavannes has a Bachelor of Science from the University of Toronto, an MBA in Healthcare Management, and an Executive MBA from the Rotman School of Management.
